Celebrating Mother's and Father's Day in the US and the UK.

Today we celebrate Father's Day in Poland so I want to share with you some information about the way Mother's and Father's Day are celebrated in the United States and The United Kingdom.

1. Celebrating Mother's Day in the US

Mother's Day in the United States is annually held on the second Sunday of May. It celebrates motherhood and it is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts, cards, flowers, candy, a meal in a restaurant or other treats to their mother and mother figures, including grandmothers, great-grandmothers, stepmothers, and foster mothers.

Many people send cards or gifts to their mother or mother figure or make a special effort to visit her. Common Mother's Day gifts are flowers, chocolate, candy, clothing, jewelry and treats, such as a beauty treatment or trip to a spa. Some families organize an outing for all of their members or hold a special meal at home or in a restaurant. In the days and weeks before Mother's Day, many schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their mothers.

2. Celebrating Mother's Day in the UK

Mothering Sunday, sometimes known as Mother's Day, is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It is exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday and usually falls in the second half of March or early April.

Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday, is now a day to honor mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their mother. They take cards and gifts to her and may treat her to brunch, lunch or high tea in a cafe, restaurant or hotel. People who cannot visit their mother usually send gifts or cards to her.

An important part of Mothering Sunday is giving cards and gifts. Common Mother's Day gifts are cakes, flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and luxurious clothing. Some people do not give a physical gift, but choose to treat their mother or grandmother to a special meal, beauty treatment or fun outing.

Specially decorated Mother's Day cakes are available in many stores. In the days and weeks before Mothering Sunday, many schools, Sunday schools and children's organizations help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or gift for their mother.

3. Celebrating Father's Day in the US

Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. Its origins may lie in a memorial service held for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907.

Father's Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. Common Father's Day gifts include sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance.

Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the 'father' figures in a particular extended family. Father figures can include fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives. This may be a simple walk in the countryside or a whole planned "experience". Popular Father's Day experiences include driving a fire engine, rally car, tank or even airplane or taking a golf, football or cricket lesson with a celebrity coach. Other families organize a special meal at home or in a pub or restaurant. A common Father's Day meal is a traditional roast dinner with meat, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables, which can be eaten in a pub and accompanied by pints of ale or lager.

Do you love Netflix? I bet you do. I love Netflix too. Do you watch any series on Netflix? I bet you you do. So when you spend loads of hours maybe you could devote this time to improve your English skills?

Here are some of the greatest show which can help you spend your time in a pleasant way and work on your English:

1. The Crown

My favorite when it comes to the British accent. I am a huge fan of this series as I am also interested in the lives of the Royals. The series tells the story of the Queen Elizabeth II's life when she got married and became the Queen. Great acting, true events and beautiful British accent. You can also learn about the British culture and history.

2. House of Cards

This series is great for practicing political vocabulary. The main character is a very ambitious politician who comes up with an idea to use corruption to become the President of he US. So if you are more of USA fans the the UK, you'll like it for sure ;)



3. Orange is the new black

This one is a prison series where a woman called Piper is arrester for some minor offence. Her adventures in prison are the main plot of the show. I recommend this series if you want to get familiar with American slang.

4. Anne with an E

An orphan with a big imagination finds home with a spinster and her brother. Based on 'Anne of Green Gables'. I am a huge fan of Anne Shirley and my favorite series is the old one with Meghan Follows but Netflix did a great job with this series as well. I recommend it for teenagers and adults as well.



5.Mad men

Mad Men is an American period drama about the relationship and daily operations of a fictitious New York advertising agency in the 1960s. The Sopranos fans should like it a lot.

6. Breaking bad

The story begins with the mild-mannered chemistry teacher Walter White receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis and opting to go into the crystal meth trade to put together some money to leave behind to his family. But as the story wears on and the obstacles arise he morphs into something far more dangerous. A great series depicting the life of a small town in the US. I also enjoy the duet of actors playing the two main characters.

7. Friends
A classic. A funny sitcom series for all ages. For teenagers some situations may be difficult to get though as they now live in a completely different world. It's a story of 6 friends having various ups and downs, full of hilarious moments with a great jokes and great acting.

8. The Magicians
A show for HarryPotter fans. Jason Ralph stars as Quentin Coldwater, a melancholic late-twentysomething who discovers that not only is magic actually real, but he’s a magicians. He goes to Brakebills, a graduate school for magicians of sorts, and soon discovers there’s an even bigger twist involved. The show, like the books, tackles issues of depression, sexual assault, and mental illness in a realistic but entertaining way. Its darkly funny sense of humor keeps things from getting too dark, and the performances are great.

9. The good place

The Good Place is set in an afterlife where Eleanor Shellstrop (Bell), a recently deceased woman who lived a selfish, spiteful life, has ended up in the “good place” by mistake. With the help of her soulmate Chidi (Harper), she tries to learn how to be a better person as we get flashbacks to Eleanor’s life and the lives of those around her. Meanwhile, the architect of the good place, Michael (Danson), tries to figure out why everything in this utopia is going haywire.

Chciałabym dziś przedstawić Wam ciekawą propozycję książeczek dla dzieci. 

Są to oczywiście książeczki po angielsku, dzięki którym możemy nasze maluchy wprowadzać w świat bajek oraz jednocześnie zapoznawać i osłuchiwać z językiem angielskim.

Zestaw "my  reading library" to propozycja Brytyjskiego wydawnictwa Usborne dostępna u przedstawicieli polskich, choć podejrzewam, że kupicie go też na allegro. Ja swój kupiłam już kilka lat temu, z myślą że posłuży moim dzieciom i właśnie zaczynamy z synkiem przeglądać książeczki.Składa się 50 wspaniałych książeczek z programu do nauki czytania wydawnictwa Usborne.  Ponadto jest kontynuacją My first reading library dla najmłodszych dzieci. Znajdują się w niej bajki, baśnie i wiersze w przepięknej szacie graficznej i tak pomyślane, by zachwycać młodych czytelników.

Celebrating the Queen's birthday. Why does she celebrate twice?

It's the official celebration of the Queen's 92nd birthday today. Queen Elisabeth has got two birthdays in fact. One when she was born- 21st of April, and the second one is the day of the official celebration- the second Saturday in June. 

In the past, official celebrations to mark a King or Queen's birthday in the UK have been held on a day that isn't their actual birthday.

The double birthday tradition was started more than 250 years ago by King George II in 1748. He was born in November, which is quite well-known for rather a poor weather. However, the King wanted to have a big summer celebration so he decided to combine his birthday celebration with an annual military parade in summer.

The Queen usually spends her actual birthday with her family, although there are special gun salutes in London at midday to mark it. 

There are 41-gun salute in Hyde Park, a 21-gun salute in Windsor Great Park and a 62-gun salute at the Tower of London.

For her 'official' birthday' in June, the day is marked publicly with a big parade in London called Trooping the Colour. Trooping the Colour has marked the official birthday of the British monarch for over 260 years.Over 1400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians take part in the event, so it's quite a spectacle!

Queen is accompanied by other Royal Family members and they all appear on the Balcony of the Buckingham Palace to wave to the crowds. This year, newly-weds Harry and Meghan will appear together as the husband and wife. The Queen will also be accompanied by her husband, Prince Phillip as well as Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family. 

Lots of members of the public waving flags and wearing Union Jacks will fill the Mall outside Buckingham Palace to watch it.

On the day, a big parade will start at the Queen's official residence - Buckingham Palace - before moving along the Mall to Horse Guards Parade at Whitehall, near to Downing Street, and then back again.

Przychodzę dziś do Was z postem na temat, o którym czytałam wiele jeszcze zanim planowałam ciąże, a mianowicie rodzicielstwo bliskości.
Czym jest rodzicielstwo bliskości?

Rodzicielstwo bliskości to termin utworzony przez pediatrę Williama Searsa, określający filozofię rodzicielską opartą na zasadach przywiązania w psychologii rozwojowej, która mówi, że dziecko tworzy z opiekunami silną więź emocjonalną, mającą wpływ na całe jego życie.

1. Filary rodzicielstwa bliskości.

Rodzicielstwo bliskości opiera się na 7 zasadach zwanych filarami, są to narzędzia oparte na biologicznym przywiązaniu dziecka do matki oraz na zachowaniach, które pozwalają dziecku wspaniale się rozwijać. Niektórzy rodzice silniej polegają na niektórych filarach, inni wykorzystują je wszystkie. Jedno jest pewne, stosując te narzędzia na pewno zbliżymy się do naszego dziecka i pozostaniemy blisko, dbając o jego potrzeby. Dla mnie rodzicielstwo bliskości z pewnością uczyniło moje macierzyństwo jeszcze piękniejszym i pozwoliło mi nawiązać bliską relację z synkiem. Dziś krótko opiszę filary rodzicielstwa bliskości, niektóre zaś rozwinę w osobnych postach później.

- Bądź blisko od porodu.

Pierwsze godziny i dni po porodzie to czas, kiedy zwłaszcza matka i dziecko poznają się i uczą się siebie nawzajem.  Z biologicznego punktu widzenia najlepsze w pierwszych 6 tygodniach po porodzie jest ciągłe przebywanie matki i dziecka.


- Karm piersią.

Karmienie piersią pomaga mamom poznać potrzeby swojego dziecka oraz reagować na nie szybko oraz w odpowiedni sposób. Z pewnością jest to jeden z trudniejszych do realizacji filarów, wymagający od mam wiele samozaparcia oraz pomocy od partnera. Pamiętajmy, że Światowa Organizacja zdrowia zaleca karmienie wyłącznie piersią przez 6 pierwszych miesięcy życia dziecka, a następnie rozszerzanie diety malucha przy jednoczesnym kontynuowaniu karmienia do ukończenia przez dziecko drugiego roku życia.

- Noś dziecko przy sobie.

Według twórców rodzicielstwa bliskości noszone dzieci mniej grymaszą. Poza tym gdy mamy dziecko przy sobie stajemy się bardziej wrażliwym rodzicem. Jako, że mamy dziecko blisko siebie cały czas lepiej je poznajemy, lepiej odpowiadamy na jego potrzeby, a co za tym idzie nawiązujemy bliższą relację z dzieckiem.

-Śpij przy dziecku.

Prawdą jest, że najlepszym miejscem do spania dla małego człowieka jest to w możliwie najmniejszej odległości od rodzica. Dziecko najbezpieczniej czuje się przy rodzicu, dla mamy zaś taka bliskość może być ułatwieniem w karmieniu. Powiem Wam, że nasz synek od początku spał z nami. Gdy był malutki używaliśmy specjalnego kokonu niemowlęcego, teraz po prostu śpi między nami w łóżku. Oczywiście jest to wygodne dla mnie ze względu, że synek nadal jest karmiony piersią, ale też widzę, że on lepiej przesypia noce gdy jest blisko nas. Nawet gdy przebudzi się. w nocy łatwo zasypia ponownie po przytuleniu się do nas.

-Słuchaj płaczu swojego dziecka.

Płacz jest dla dziecka językiem porozumienia, dla rodzica  powinien więc być sygnałem, na który zawsze (ale to zawsze!) powinien reagować. Sama jestem ostrym przeciwnikiem wychowywania dziecka na zasadzie "pozwól mu się wypłakać" lub "sam się uspokoi, nie bierz go od razu na ręce". Nie, nie uspokoi się sam. Tak, bierz go na ręce. Zawsze. I tul. Płaczące dzieci nie manipulują nami,a komunikują potrzebę. Zadaniem rodzica jest zawsze reagować. Zadaniem rodzica wychowującego dziecko w duchu rodzicielstwa bliskości jest reagować jak najszybciej. Im większą wrażliwość na potrzeby dziecka wykażemy tym bardziej nauczy się ono nam ufać.

-Pamiętaj o równowadze i wyznaczaniu granic.

Ważne, aby nie zatracić się jedynie w spełnianiu potrzeb dziecka. Pamiętajmy także o sobie oraz o naszym związku. Warto również zwrócić uwagę na samopoczucie kobiet w pierwszych tygodniach po porodzie. Każda mama, nawet ta która nie przyzna się do tego, potrzebuje na początku swojej drogi jako mama wsparcia. Należ uważnie obserwować jej samopoczucie, ponieważ wiele kobiet łapie w tygodniach po porodzie baby blues, a stąd już niedaleko do depresji poporodowej. Statystki mówią, że u ok 10-15 procent kobiet baby blues rozwija się w depresję poporodową wymagającą pomocy specjalisty.

-Strzeż się trenerów dzieci.

Pewnie większość z nas w momencie kiedy zostaje rodzicami nie wie wszystkiego o wychowywaniu dzieci. Wiele rzeczy robimy intuicyjnie, wielu uczymy się odpowiadając na potrzeby dziecka. Większość z nas zostaje także zasypana radami od cioć, babć, mam, teściowych itp w stylu: "daj mu się wypłakać", "nie noś bo się przyzwyczai", "pilnuj jego rytmu dnia", "niech od początku ma swoje miejsce, nie bierz go do łóżka". I tym podobne. Jeśli usłyszycie takie rady wiedzcie, że dla tych osób wasz pomysł na wychowywanie dziecka w duchu rodzicielstwa bliskości będzie jak z kosmosu. Wy zaś będziecie wytykani jako ci, którzy rozpieszczają dziecko, a sami w końcu będą narzekać ;) Prawdą jest, że taki trening dzieci prowadzi tylko do utraty wiary przez dziecko w jego umiejętności komunikacyjne. Gdy dziecko widzi, że rodzic nie reaguje na jego potrzeby, po pewnym czasie przestaje te potrzeby komunikować wiedząc, że i tak nikt nie odpowie na nie.

2. Korzyści płynące z rodzicielstwa bliskości.

Na podstawie badań przeprowadzonych przez Searsów okazało się, że w porównaniu z innymi dziećmi, dziecko wychowane w duchu rodzicielstwa bliskości jest bardziej:

• empatyczne,
• opiekuńcze,
• ufne i zarazem godne zaufania,
• utalentowane,
• ciekawe świata,
• empatyczne,
• stabilne emocjonalnie,
• sprawne motorycznie,
• zdrowsze,
• odpowiedzialne i niezależne,
• pewne siebie,
• łatwo nawiązuje kontakty i tworzy więź z innymi,
• szybko odnajduje się w nowych warunkach.

Myślę, że każdemu z nas zależy aby nasze dzieci takie były, dlaczego więc im tego nie ułatwić? :)

Muszę przyznać, że przez te 10 miesięcy z moim synkiem przepadłam na punkcie rodzicielstwa bliskości. Szczerze wierzę, że taka bliska relacja z dzieckiem zaprocentuje w przyszłości dla niego. A wy, co sądzicie o rodzicielstwie bliskości? Znacie? Lubicie? Stosujecie?

Web 2.0 tools for teachers: Linguahouse.

Witajcie!

Dzisiejszym postem chciałabym rozpocząć cykl wpisów dotyczących aplikacji i narzędzi internetowych przydatnym lub strony dzięki którym czas przygotowania lekcji się skraca, a materiały które wykorzystujemy są bardziej różnorodne. 

Linguahouse.com to witryna, która oferuje nam materiały, które są w pewnym sensie gotowymi lekcjami. Kiedy więc potrzebujemy na szybko coś ekstra, a nie możemy poświęcić czasu na szukanie artykułu, a później przygotowywanie do niego ćwiczeń to właśnie Linguahouse może przyjść nam z pomocą.

Jeśli chodzi i stronę techniczną używania linguahouse, to aby móc pobierać materiały musimy założyć konto. Konto może być bezpłatne oraz premium. Ja korzystam z opcji bezpłatnej i dzięki niej mogę pobierać ogromne ilości materiałów. Wersja premium daje nam dostęp do jeszcze większej ich liczby, jednak szczerze mówiąc korzystając z opcji bezpłatnej również możemy urozmaicić nasze lekcje, a czego nie uda nam się pobrać z linguahouse możemy poszukać gdzieś indziej. Myślę, że tak jak każdy nauczyciel, ja również  nie korzystam ciągle z jednego narzędzia, bo mi się ono zwyczajnie nudzi :D

Do rzeczy!

Na stronie materiały możemy wyszukiwać z użyciem kilku kategorii.

Przede wszystkim są one podzielone na angielski ogólny i biznesowy, znajdziemy również elementy przygotowania do egzaminu IELTS. Poza tym możemy wybierać lekcje tematycznie, poziomami, ze względu na czas trwania zajęć, czy zagadnieniami gramatycznymi.
Znajdziemy tu materiały na każdym poziomie językowym, z wykorzystaniem multimediów, nagrań z TED talks czy też artykułami z prasy anglojęzycznej. Ostatnio pojawiły się również lekcje oparte na artykułach z breakingnewsenglish (który notabene również polecam ;)).

Ja bardzo często korzystam z Linguahouse, gdy chcę odświeżyć z uczniami gramatykę. Ostatnio na przykład pobrałam 3 zestawy do powtórki modal verbs i muszę przyznać, że uczniowie byli bardzo zadowoleni. Materiał od razu był pogrupowany na konkretne zastosowanie czasowników modalnych, a ostatni zestaw dotyczył używania czasowników modalnych w odniesieniu do przeszłości. te 3 zestawy zaoszczędziły mi mnóstwo czasu, ponieważ ktoś już wykonał pracę za mnie i pogrupował modale oraz przygotował odpowiednie ćwiczenia, stopniując dodatkowo stopień trudności.

Bardzo lubię również materiały z wykorzystaniem TED talks, ponieważ te nagrania które są wybrane do materiałów zwykle trwają po 5-7 minut podczas gdy moje wyszukiwania zwykle przynoszą inne rezultaty i potem muszę ciąć wideo lub kombinować jakoś inaczej ;)
