According to the latest reports from Anturia, a country bedeviled by natural disasters, 100 people are confirmed dead and up to 400 are feared drowned after the rivers burst their banks on Monday and inundated large parts of the country. Ten days of heavy monsoon rains raised the number of dead to 1200 in this year's unusually heavy storms and widespread flooding.
A flood occurs when water overflows or inundates land that's normally dry. This can happen in a multitude of ways. Most common is when rivers or streams overflow their banks. Excessive rain, a ruptured dam or levee, rapid ice melting in the mountains, or even an unfortunately placed beaver dam can overwhelm a river and send it spreading over the adjacent land, called a floodplain. Coastal flooding occurs when a large storm or tsunami causes the sea to surge inland.
Reportedly, a big boat carrying 50 passengers capsized in one river killing at least 30 people, while another boat sank in crocodile-infested waters.
Many villages are isolated, as bridges have been damaged and hundreds of miles of roads are under water. Railroad services have been suspended and flooded airports have forced the cancellations of flights. This has been an unprecedented disaster causing severe shortages of food and and fuel due to submerged storage buildings.
Still, flood- related crime occurred. As much as 100 cases of looting of abandoned properties have been reported, as well as several cases of sabotage. Boat patrols have been set up to locate looting gangs and guard the dykes against subversives. However, a clear picture of damage will only emerge after the waters recede.
